Part Naming and Numbering

Tell Generate how your shop numbers and names parts, before a bulk upload.

Before you start

Generate requires Individual or higher. The shipped prompts are examples, not your numbering system. Replace them before you rely on Generate for a bulk upload.

How to get there

Open Global Settings → AI helpers in the workspace. Generate runs during CAD, schematic, or BOM review on New Report and Upload, and on the Parts Library review step.

Configuring prompts

Edit Part numbering system prompt and Part naming description prompt, then click Save on each row. Use Reset to default prompt to restore the example text shown in this guide. Those defaults are a starting pattern only. If you have not saved a custom prompt yet, Generate uses the example numbering system below.

Default part numbering system prompt

Use the format of [PROJECT]-[CATEGORY]-[ASSEMBLY-NUMBER]-[SUB-ASSEMBLY-NUMBER][PART-NUMBER]

Component Breakdown
Project Code (3 chars): A unique identifier for the machine model.

Category (1 char): Distinguishes between different types of items.
A: Assemblies/Sub-assemblies
M: Manufactured Parts (custom machined/fabricated)
P: Purchase Parts like Hardware/Cots (bolts, bearings, washers)

Assembly Number (4 digits): Matches the specific assembly (1000 and up for top-level)
Sub-Assembly (2 digits): Matches the specific module (00 for top-level, 01-10 for subs).
Part Number (3 digits): Sequential identifier (001-999).

Convention Rules:
Always use leading zeros to keep the part number the same length
"Common Hardware" (like a standard M8 bolt) gets a project-specific number

Use the following format for Part Descriptions:

Noun-Modifier-Attribute-Standard

Noun: Start with what the part is first
Modifier: The modifier further describes the part, use it's most defining feature. Use industry specific terminology and customs.
Attribute: The attribute should remove the remaining ambiguity of the part, use the most specific attribute. Use industry specific terminology and customs.
Standard: If there is a standard include it. (DIN Number, ISO Number, ANSI Number, etc.)

Bearings: [Type] + Bearing + [Bearing Number]
Seals: [Type] + Seal + [Size] + [Material/Compound] + [Modifiers]
O-Rings: Inside Diameter (I.D.) x Cross-Section (C.S.) x Material/Compound (e.g., NBR, FKM/Viton, EPDM) x Hardness (e.g., 70 Shore A)
Fasteners: Head Type Thread Diameter x Pitch x Length x Grade Ex. HCS M8x1.25x25 Gr 8.8
Washer: [Type] + [Size] + [Series/Form] + [Material/Finish]
Circlip: [Style] + [Internal/External] + [Size]
Bushing: [Style] OD x ID x Length x Material

Avoid: Using vendor names.

Tips

  • Put your own numbering and naming system into the prompts before bulk uploads so AI suggestions match how your shop already identifies parts.
  • Review suggested numbers and names against customer-facing drawings before confirming sync to the Parts Library.
  • Keep numbering and naming prompts aligned: the numbering prompt sets structure; the naming prompt sets how each line reads in the Parts Library and report.

If you get stuck

  • Generate still uses the example scheme — click Save on each prompt row after you edit.
  • Results ignore OEM numbers — mention OEM and Manufacture part numbers in the numbering prompt if those should drive the internal number.
